How to Cite an in Text Citation for a Paragraph From the Bible in APA Style

Citations in a text allow the reader to track down where the text came from and, if necessary, to locate the larger context in which it exists. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), the Bible should not be cited like a regular book, but instead should use its own type of citation. You must identify the version of the Bible that you are using when you first cite it, not afterward.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the quote you wish to use in quotation marks, leaving off any end punctuation.

    • 2

Determine the name of the book, the chapter and the verse of the segment that you want to cite.

    • 3

Place the name of the book, the chapter and the verse within parentheses directly after the last question mark, separated by a space. There should be a space between the book and the chapter and a colon and no spaces between the chapter and verse. If you need to mention the version of the Bible, place a comma after the verse number and then write the name of the Bible.

    • 4

Place the end punctuation from the citation after the last parentheses. A sample citation might read “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14, English Standard Version).
