How Do I Cite the Same Author In-Text for the Same Book but for Different Chapters in APA Style?

APA style was created by the American Psychological Association as a means of creating fewer distractions while reading academic and professional research papers. APA style in-text citations use a minimal amount of information from the full citation located in the reference section of your paper to identify each source in a concise manner. Instead of citing the chapter number, APA only requires the page number to be cited in-text. There are two ways to cite the author in-text that enable you to create a better flowing document while citing multiple chapters.

Instructions

    • 1

Use specific quotes from the author by typing "According to" before the authors' name or just using the authors' name then placing the date of the source after the authors' name. Remember to place the actual quotation in quotation marks.

    • 2

Place the page number that the quote came from in parenthesis after the sentence. Use "p." to abbreviate the word page. Your finished citation will look like this: According to J. Douglas (2003), "eHow is a fast growing information resource" (p. 189). The alternative would look like this: J. Douglas states "eHow is a fast growing information resource" (p.189).

    • 3

Cite other information from your research in the book by placing the citation at the end of the sentence in your paper. First type the sentence, including the information, in your own words.

    • 4

Place the name of the author followed by a comma then the year of the publication in parenthesis after the sentence. Place another comma after the year and then type the page number. The citation will look like this: (J. Douglas, 2003, p. 189).

    • 5

Repeat the citation as many times as needed, changing the page number for applicable citations.
