How to Cite the Authors of Internet Sources

Citing Internet sources can sometimes be tricky, simply because the names of the authors are not always readily apparent, or may not be listed at all. However, both the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Modern Language Association (MLA) offer guidelines for the citation of Internet sources, including how to format authors. The exact form of your citation will depend on whether you are using MLA or APA guidelines.

Instructions

Format your reference list entry in the following manner if your source has an author with a normal name:

In MLA style, it should be: Smith, John.

In APA style, it should be: Smith, J.

To cite within the text, MLA style should appear as: (Smith 11)

To cite within the text, APA style should appear as: (Smith, 1999, p. 11)

Format your reference list entry in the following manner if your source has an organization as an author:

      American Psychiatric Association.

This is true of both APA and MLA styles.

To cite within the text, MLA style should appear as: (APA 11)

To cite within the text, APA style should appear as: (APA, 1999, p. 11)

Format your reference list entry in the following manner if your source has an author identified only by screenname:

      lboyd473.

This is true for both APA and MLA styles.

To cite within the text, MLA style should appear as: (lboyd473 11)

To cite within the text, APA style should appear as: (lboyd473, 1999, p. 11)

Omit the author from your reference list entry if there is no author listed. This means that you will begin your reference list entry with the title of the document or web page. You should also alphabetize your entry according to the title, because no author is available. This is standard procedure in both APA and MLA style.

When citing within the text, you should use the title or an abbreviated version of the title in place of the author's last name. If your source is a major work, italicize the title. If it is a minor work such as a web page or article, the title should appear in quotation marks. For example:

To cite within the text, MLA style should appear as: ("Types of Cats" 11)

To cite within the text, APA style should appear as: ("Types of Cats", 1999, p. 11)
