How to Write an APA Style Bibliography for Sources From the Internet

Accurate citations are an imperative piece of any high school or college research paper. Their uniformity allows the teacher or professor to quickly ascertain the validity of the research, its conformity to the assignment and the integrity of the work. More important, in academic and scientific communities, a single rule on citations allows experiments to be reproduced and plagiarism to be quickly spotted. APA (American Psychological Association) is the format most frequently used in social science research. And while APA is explicit in its specifications, the rules are continually being updated, each year generally offering a new edition of APA guidelines. Any student or researcher instructed to use APA style should adhere to the specifications of his professor or university or procure the most up-to-date and accepted version of APA.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the bibliography at the end of the paper, center titled: References.

    • 2

Alphabetize the bibliography listing by author's last name and first initial. Where there is more than one author, alphabetize the author list within each citation.

    • 3

Align each entry on the left, indenting subsequent lines a half-inch from the left margin.

    • 4

Place the date of the publication in parenthesis following the authors' names, followed by a period.

    • 5

Follow with the title of the article, followed by a period.

    • 6

Follow with the title of the online periodical, set in italics, with major words capitalized, followed by a comma and the volume number. Then place the issue number in parenthesis, if available, followed by page numbers, if available.

    • 7

Use the words "retrieved from" followed by the Web page, starting with the HTTP and followed by the full Web address.

    • 8

Include the date you accessed the information if the source is likely to change.

    • 9

Include the above steps as secondary when citing print articles found online. Begin with appropriate citations for the journal article, reference book or other source and then add the online retrieval information so that the reader can access the primary source or locate the article online as you did.
