How to Cite Bibliographic Entries MLA Style

Most every paper assigned throughout your academic career, whether for an English, history or science class, will require you to cite sources and provide bibliographical information for the materials you reference while writing your paper. Commonly, teachers and professors require the use of the Modern Language Association (MLA) style of documenting sources, outlined in detail by the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. The MLA style calls for in-text citations that correspond with a list of works cited at the end of the paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Compile a list of your sources. Include only sources that you have quoted, summarized or paraphrased in your paper.

    • 2

Create bibliographical entries for each of your sources in the following format:

Author's last name, first name. Title of the book. City of publication: publisher, date. Medium.

    • 3

Alphabetize each entry to create a "Works Cited" page. The works cited page goes at the end of your paper.

    • 4

Reference a source within the text by introducing information taken directly from the source with a quote, summary or paraphrase.

    • 5

Insert the author's name followed by the page number at the end of the sentence, in parentheses. If the author's name is contained in the sentence, put only the page number in the parentheses.
