Write down a topic for your research. Look on a course syllabus website for a survey course in HCI if you can't think of an HCI topic off the top of your head,. Pick a topic that you find interesting and that's within your range of technical competence. Move on to a different topic if the topic breakdown in an intro textbook references mathematical skills that you don't possess.
Gather research materials on your topic from respected journals in computer science such as "Computing Reviews," "Lecture Notes in Computer Science," and "Theoretical Computer Science." To search for specific articles, use a search provider, such as the Academic Search Premier or JSTOR, and search for specific terms, including "human computer interaction," "HCI" and "artificial intelligence."
Take notes from each of your sources. Take notes on the sections on HCI if you've selected textbooks or articles on artificial intelligence. Take notes on the entire article if you've selected journal articles on HCI. Copy down all equations and sections of code pertaining to the HCI issues at hand.
Write an outline of your paper. At the top of your outline, write a thesis statement, which summarizes your main argument in one sentence. Write a Roman numeral before each main point, write a letter before each subpoint, and write an Arabic numeral before each piece of specific evidence or quote. Include mathematical statements or lines of code as specific evidence on your outline, since it's a highly technical topic.
Write the fleshed out copy of the paper. In the intro, write comments that introduce your topic, followed by a thesis statement. Write a paragraph for each bullet point in your outline; a paragraph to introduce each point, a paragraph for each subpoint, and a paragraph to discuss each piece of evidence or mathematics. Write a conclusion that restates the thesis statement and provides some final remarks on the topic. Align written paragraphs to the left; align mathematical expressions and code to the center. To do this, simply right click, then select align, and then click center.
Write a bibliography page for the paper. Provide the publication name, article name, author name, page and publication date for each information source you used in the paper. Arrange this list in alphabetical order if your professor has asked you to do so.
