Avoid taking a stance on your initial research question. Gathering all of the information relevant to your research question allows you to develop a stronger base for the inferences in your research paper. For example, say your topic is "juvenile delinquency treatment programs." If you started your research with the conclusion that treatment programs do not work, you will probably not consult sources which say they do work. The strongest inferences require consideration of all available information.
Research your topic thoroughly.
Draft an outline of your research paper. Include a description of how you will present the research in a way which will convince the readers to draw the same inferences you made. Using the juvenile delinquency example, let's say your research lead you to the inference that early intervention programs work best in preventing juvenile delinquency. Convincing your readers to make the same inference means explaining at least a few of the programs, including early intervention, that have been tried, and the results of those programs.
Review the inferences you have made, ensuring they are clearly supported by your research. Ask yourself if you have made too many assumptions. If the answer is yes, revise your position in your outline.
Write your paper in accordance with your outline.
