How to Write in the Chicago Turabian Style

Turabian style is a writing format used in academia for research papers and theses, as well as by the book publishing industry. As a matter of fact, copy editors often refer to it as their copy-editing bible. If you have a paper to write or a manuscript to edit, chances are you will have to use Turabian style guidelines. Turabian style has a specific guidelines that span from the font used, citations and the bibliographic reference page. These guidelines also apply to the cover page should you require one.

      Set the margins at no less than 1 inch but not greater than 1.5 inches.

      Use the font Times New Roman or Palatino, and set your type size to 12 points.

      Center your title to a third way down of the first page, followed by your name and class information.

      Double space the entire article, except block quotations, table titles and figure quotations, which are single-spaced. Leave a space before and after a block quote.

      Number each page in the top right of the header.

      Use end notes or footnotes to cite sources and include bibliographical information. The first line of a footnote or end note should be indented.

      Use "Ibid," which means "in the same place," if you are citing from the previous source, and include the pages from which you are citing. For example, Ibid., 2. Cross reference notes in order.

      Put an extra line between the body of the text and subheads. Do not use a period at the end of the subhead.

      Use the conjunction "and" to cite multiple authors of a book in the bibliography. The use of digital objects is preferred to URLs when citing electronic articles.
