How to Write an Abstract Page in APA Style

Writing an abstract in the style and format set by the American Psychological Association (APA) in its "Publication Manual" might seem like a daunting task to students who have not had to write one before. But the guidelines are simple. All the students have to do is follow the format and write briefly the key points of their paper.

      Type the page header and page number if your computer software is not set up to add it automatically. The page header should contain the paper's title flush left at the top margin of the page. The title should be in all capital letters. On the same line on the right side of the page, the header show a "2" for the page number. Set the formatting on the page to double-space.

      Type "Abstract" on the first line below the page header. The word should be centered, with the first letter capitalized. Do not bold or underline.

      Hit return, then type a brief summary highlighting the key points of your report. Do not indent. Include the topic of your research, the questions you addressed, who the participants in the study were, a summary of the methods you used in your research as well as your results, analysis and conclusions. Write concisely. This paragraph should be between 150 and 250 words.

      Hit return and indent if you'd like to include keywords for your work. Type "Keywords" in italics, then type in keywords related to your report.

      Proofread the abstract page for spelling, grammatical and logic errors. Make any corrections necessary.
