How to Prepare a Thesis With the Chicago Manual of Style

Even if you've completed most of your previous work in another style, you may be asked to use Chicago style for your thesis. Because the Chicago Manual of Style is predominately used for book publishing, academic papers, theses and dissertations use the Chicago Manual of Style's approved Turabian Manual for Writers for submitting papers and documents not prepared for publishing. These guidelines include margin formatting, footnote usage and notation, spacing and paragraph rules. Familiarize yourself with the style before you begin writing.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare your title page by placing a page at the beginning of your document. Type in the title of your thesis in all capital letters a third of the way down the blank page. The following information is then included a third of the way from the bottom of the page, with one space between each entry: your name, the university and department, the class information, if applicable, and the date. Center all elements of the title page.

    • 2

Number every page of your thesis after the title page in the upper-right corner. The numbering should begin with "2" to accommodate the title page.

    • 3

Adjust the margins so there is 1 inch on each side of the page.

    • 4

Double space the entire thesis, except for block quotations and footnotes.

    • 5

Format block quotations by indenting them four spaces from the margin. Single space all block quotations and footnotes.

    • 6

Format your footnotes by placing a superscript next to the end of a sentence that contains referenced information. In the footnote, type in the number of the superscript, followed by the bibliography information related to the reference. For instance, your first reference will be assigned the superscript digit "1." The bibliography information in the footnote will follow the number "1," so readers see the source of the information you used in the text.

    • 7

Format the footnotes by indenting them five spaces and typing the author's last name, first name, article title in quotation marks, title of the book or magazine in italics, publishing house and date of publication, and page numbers (if applicable). For future references to the same source, type "Ibid" in the footnote.

    • 8

Create your bibliography by making a new page at the end of your thesis. Type "Bibliography" in bold and center it at the top of the page. Include all of the references you made in the same format as they appeared in your footnotes. Arrange the entries alphabetically by author's last name.
