How to Format the Cover Page of a Paper

Throughout the course of your college career, you may sometimes be asked to provide a cover page or a title page for your term paper. As other parts of a paper, a cover page should be formatted in a specific manner. Modern Language Association (MLA) format does not have rules for formatting title pages, instead requiring a student to list his name and the class in the upper left corner of the first page. However, American Psychological Association (APA ) format does publish guidelines for the proper formation of a cover page.

Instructions

    • 1

Format your margins so that they are one inch wide on all sides. Make sure that the page is double-spaced and use 12 point Times New Roman font, per APA recommendations.

    • 2

Position a page header on the top line of your paper. List the title of your paper in capitals, preceded by the phrase "running header" and a colon. Align this so that it begins flush with the left margin. For example:

Running header: SHAKESPEARE AND THE GLOBE THEATER

    • 3

List a roman numeral I as the page number. Position this flush with the right margin on the same line as your page header.

    • 4

List the title of your paper about one quarter of the way down the page, centered and capitalized normally. For example: Shakespeare and the Globe Theater

    • 5

Type your name under the title, centered.

    • 6

Add the name of the university you are attending below your name, also centered.
