How to Cite the Title of a Poetry Collection

Citing sources correctly is one habit that will give your college term papers an air of professionalism. One aspect of correct citation is correctly formatting the title of works you are referencing. When citing a collection of poetry, follow the general guidelines for citing books. The exact format that the title in your reference should take depends on whether you are adhering to Modern Language Association (MLA) or American Psychological Association (APA) style guidelines.

Instructions

  1. MLA Format

    • 1

Place the title after the name of the author but before the publication information. For example, the general format for the citation of a book in MLA format is as follows:

Author's Name. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication.

    • 2

Italicize the title, and follow it with a period. Capitalize all letters except for simple articles. If there is a subtitle, the title and subtitle should be separated by a colon. For example:

Love in Malta: a Journey of Spring and Summer.

    • 3

Ensure that the completed citation appears in the following general format. Remember to italicize the title.

Smith, Jim. Love in Malta: a Journey of Spring and Summer. Boston: Fall Press, 1996. Print.

    APA Format

    • 4

Position the title after the name of the author and year of publication, but before the place of publication and name of the publisher. For example, this is the general format for the citation of books in APA format:

Author's Name. (Year of publication). Title of work. Location: Publisher.

    • 5

Italicize the title. If there is one, the subtitle should also appear in italics. According to APA Style guidelines, only the first letter of the title should be capitalized, along with any proper nouns. If there is a subtitle, the first letter of the subtitle must always be capitalized. A period should follow the title. The title and subtitle should be separated by a colon. For example:

Love in Malta: A journey of spring and summer.

    • 6

Ensure that the final citation appears in the following general format:

Smith, J. (1996). Love in Malta: A journey of spring and summer. Boston: Fall Press.

Remember to italicize the title and subtitle.
