How to Cite the Title of an Article in an Essay

Citation, though a hassle, plays an important role in an essay. Imagine reading an essay and stumbling across a pretty hefty claim without any citation. Chances are you'd take it with a grain of salt instead of accepting it as fact. Properly citing an article title in an essay is essential to both the essay's and writer's credibility.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the article title within quotations in the sentence. For example, "The article 'Characters Or Plot' explores the balance of what makes a story move forward."

    • 2

Capitalize the first letter of the first and last word in the article title. The Modern Language Association style typically forgoes capitalizing prepositions and articles but capitalizes nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Many other writing styles call for capitalization of any word longer than three letters.

    • 3

Capitalize the first letter of each word for short titles. For instance, "Coming To America."
