How to Cite a Film Title

Both academic and casual writing use sources to provide material, corroboration or specific facts. These references are commonly books and papers, but occasionally include sources such as personal interviews, online databases and movies. As with any other research, cite information that you obtain from films to increase your credibility and maintain integrity. The specific manner of citation will vary depending on your particular writing goals and requirements, but most film citation styles require the same information and similar structure.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the movie title, director, distributor and year of release. These may be on the box, available online or visible within the movie itself. Collect other relevant information, such as actor names or country of origin, if they're relevant to your citation.

    • 2

Cite the film title in the body of your writing. Set the title in italics for typed papers or underline in handwritten work. In parentheses after the title, include the year, or director and year of the specific movie version that you're referencing.

    • 3

Choose a citation style for bibliography references. The Modern Language Association and American Psychological Association styles and other style handbooks will have specific style guidelines for citing films. If you're primarily citing a film to refer to the actor, director or composer, move this information to the front of the citation. Always include the director, movie title, film company and year in your bibliography citation.
