How to Cite the Title of a Production

Writers of research papers, essays or articles use citations to credit the sources they use in their work. Several style guides exist that explain how to include citations in your work, but most students or professional writers use the Modern Language Association guide (MLA), the American Psychological Association guide (APA) or the Chicago Manual of Style. When including a reference to a film, follow the style required for your written work and include it in the body of your text as well as on a reference list or works cited page at the end of your paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite a film production in MLA style. Write the title of the film in italics on your works cited page, the director's name and principal performers, followed by the studio that produced it and the year it was released. End the citation by identifying your source as a film, television show or DVD. For example, a citation for the film "X-Men First Class" would read: X-Men: First Class (in italics). Dir. Matthew Vaughn. Perf. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Bacon. Twentieth Century Fox, 2011. Film.

    • 2

Do not include an in-text citation for a film if the name of the film is mentioned in your text. For example, if writing about the movie "X-Men First Class," you could simply say, "In X-Men First Class," followed by the rest of your sentence.

    • 3

Cite film productions in APA format on a reference list and include the producer's name, director, date of publication, title of production, the country it was made in and the studio. For example, "X-Men First Class" would appear as: Lee, S. (Producer), & Vaughn, M. (Director). (2011). X-Men First Class [Motion picture]. United States: Twentieth Century Fox.

    • 4

Cite the production in text by listing the title of the production within the text.

    • 5

Cite a film production in Chicago style by using footnotes in the text. The footnote is more detailed and should include the producers first and last name, the title (in italics), the format, director, release date, city, studio and the video release year. In the case of X-Men First Class, you would write: Stan Lee, X-Men First Class (in italics), Film. Directed by Matthew Vaughn (2011; New York: Twentieth Century Fox), Film. The bibliographic citation is listed in the same manner but with the last name listed first.
