How to Cite a Film

Creating the bibliography is one of the most tedious parts of writing a research paper. You are almost finished with the paper and have to go back and find all of your resources. You can make creating a bibliography easier by taking careful notes when you consult your sources and making sure you know from where your information is coming. Knowing how to cite a film correctly is an important part of using one as a reference.

  1. MLA Format

      Type the title of the film, put it in italics and follow it with a period.

      Type the director's name in the format "Dir. First name Last name" and follow with a period.

      Type the distributor of the film and follow with a comma and the year of the film's release followed by a period.

      Type the medium in which you viewed the movie and follow it with a period. Typically this will be the word "film" unless you prefer to specify DVD or VHS.

    APA Format

      Type the directors name in the format, "last name, first initial" followed by a period. Include the word, "Director" in parenthesis and add a period. If you want to spotlight a different individual, use the same format but place her position in parenthesis, whether it is writer, editor or actor.

      Type the year of the film's release in parentheses and follow it with a period.

      Type the film's title and italicize. Type the type of film enclosed by brackets and add a period.

      Type the film's country of origin, a colon, then the film's distributor. End with a period.
