How to Cite the ICD-9

The first step to understanding how to cite an ICD-9 is to understand what the resource is. An ICD-9 is an International Statistical Classification of Disease and they are released by the National Center for Health Statistics in the United States. The NCHS is a department of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) making it a government organization. Because of this, an ICD-9 is considered a government document and should normally be cited as such. However, ICD-9s are no longer available in print, so it is an online resource. This actually makes them even easier to cite.

Cite in APA by listing the author, the publication date, the title and the website in the bibliography. For example: National Center for Health Statistics (2002). Classification of Diseases and Injuries. Retrieved from ftp://ftp.cdc.gov/pub/Health_Statistics/NCHS/Publications/ICD-9/ucod.txt . Use a footnote for Chicago style in-text citations. Put the author, the title, the name of the website (in italics), the access date, and the URL. For example: National Center for Health Statistics, "Classification of Diseases and Injuries," Center for Disease Control, 22 June 2011, ftp://ftp.cdc.gov/pub/Health_Statistics/NCHS/Publications/ICD-9/ucod.txt. The bibliography is listed the same way as the footnote.
