How to Cite the U.S. Census

Citations are often a headache that people dread when writing a report or essay that includes information from a variety of sources. With the expansion of technology and the multitude of sources available at our fingertips, citing sources is a discipline writers must continue to practice with integrity. With the invaluable data included in the U.S. Census, it is important to know how to cite it accurately.

Instructions

  1. Internal Citations

    • 1

Cite the U.S. Census Bureau as the author of the publication to which you are referring. This may be done within the sentence, as a parenthetical citation or in a footnote.

    • 2

Indicate the year of the particular census. the U.S. Census takes place every 10 years.

    • 3

Include the page numbers of the census to you are citing.

    Bibliography

    • 4

List the U.S. Census Bureau as the author. Use the "U" when deciding where to place this entry in the alphabetized list.

    • 5

Type the specific title of the document you are citing. Use the most comprehensive document possible to avoid the necessity of including multiple sources related to the census.

    • 6

Cite the document's publication date. Don't assume because it is a particular year's census that it was published in that year.

    • 7

Note the source's medium of publication. For example, if you found data on a government website, cite "Web" as the medium. Census information is also on CD and in print.

    • 8

Include the publisher's location: Washington, D.C. Because you have listed the Census Bureau as the source, you don't need to include it as the publishing company.
