How to Cite the US Census in APA

Whenever you use another person's work, such as quoting or summarizing, you must cite the source where you retrieved your information. If not, this is considered plagiarism and is an unethical practice within academic communities. The APA format is a common way to cite sources. Sources can be cited within the paper or by using a reference within the paper to direct the reader to a sources list, normally located at the end of the writing.

      State the name of the U.S. Census form you are using and the date of publication. Separate the title and date with a comma and follow the date with a colon.

      Example: U.S. Census of Population and Housing, 2000:

      Follow the date with the title of the publication and the state it was derived from. The title and state will be separated by a colon and a period will follow the state.

      Example: U.S. Census of Population and Housing, 2000: Summary Population and Housing Characteristics: Missouri.

      Name the state where the publication was printed, the printing office and year of print. Separate the state and office with a colon; place a comma after the office and a period after the year.

      Example: U.S. Census of Population and Housing, 2000: Summary Population and Housing Characteristics: Missouri. Washington: Government Printing Office, 2001.

      Italicize everything except the state where the publication was printed, printing office and printing year.
