How to Cite a Book Title in a Sentence

An important part of avoiding plagiarism when writing an essay is to include the title or author of a work you referenced before quoting them or their ideas. If you decide to include the title in your sentence, it is important that you follow the formatting guidelines for writing titles. If you are writing an essay for a teacher or professor always follow their rules about citing a title, as they may have different requirements than what is standard.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the full and complete title of the book that you wish to cite in your sentence. When citing a book's title it is important that you use the correct title in its entire form, so as to give credit to the author who wrote the book and not cause any confusion to your reader.

    • 2

Write the title naturally into your sentence, wherever it fits most stylistically. Be sure to capitalize the title correctly. Capitalize the first and lasts words of the title, no matter how long the words are or what part of speech they are. Capitalize all words in the title except articles or the "to" in an infinitive.

    • 3

Surround the title of the book with quotation marks only if it is an extremely short novel, poetry book or if it is a minor work. Short books are usually under 20 pages long. Quotations marks are only used as the proper form of citation for short works.

    • 4

Underline or italicize all regular length novels directly in your sentence. Underline or italicize all of the words that are a part of the title and leave the rest of the sentence in its regular font style.
