How to Cite Books in a Proposal

Students and academicians submit proposals for new research projects and grants to fund new projects. Each proposal must follow an established format to be accepted. Grant and research proposals for history, arts and literature proposals follow the Chicago note format. The sciences and social sciences usually follow the American Psychological Association (APA) format. Latest APA rules do not require book citations to follow a citation style, but do require the author’s name. You may want to include the citation form in the reference list to remain sure no one accuses you of plagiarism.

Instructions

  1. Chicago Book Citation Format

    • 1

List the author’s name in a first and last name style for the Chicago footnote format. Follow the name with a comma and place the book title in italics. Place the publisher’s city, the name of the publisher and the date in parentheses. Place a colon between the city and the publisher’s name. Add a comma following the parentheses and the page numbers. Example: Brian Campbell, Pearls: Scriptures to Live By (Lake Mary, FL: New Horizons Press, 1994), 24.

    • 2

Format the note’s bibliographic citation with the author’s name in a last-name-first format followed by a period. Type the book title in italics and follow it with a period. List the publisher’s city, the name of the publisher and the date. Add page information following the period. Example: Campbell, Brian. Pearls: Scriptures to Live By. Lake Mary, FL: New Horizons Press, 1994. 24.

    • 3

Place the last name of the author and the publication date in parentheses for any in-text citation.

    APA Book Citation Format

    • 4

Follow a quotation in your proposal with a parenthetical in-text citation. Type an open parenthesis, the last name of the author or editor, the year the book was published and a close parenthesis. Use the last name of both authors or editors separated by “and” if a book has two authors or editors.

    • 5

Begin the book citation in a reference list with the author’s last name followed by his initials. Format a citation with two authors with the last name and initials of the first author, the word “and” and then the last name and initials of the second author. Add “(Ed.)” after the last name and initials of the book editor if there is no author.

    • 6

List the year of the book’s publication in parentheses followed by a period.

    • 7

Italicize or underline the book title, capitalizing the first letter of the first word only unless the book title contains a proper name or a colon. Follow the title with a period. Example: Anthology of American historical fiction: Western and romances.

    • 8

Provide the publisher’s city followed by a colon and the publisher’s name. Add the state following the city if the city is not well known.
