How to Cite the Name and Date of Books

Citation is a skill that everyone who needs to write an academic paper must learn. It is there to defend you and prevent any ideas of plagiarism from being presented to you. The most common source to cite is that of a book and when you do so it is important to learn exactly how to cite the name and date of a specific book, so that whoever reads the paper will know exactly which book is being sourced.
  1. MLA

    • Usually the Modern Language Association (MLA) will be the format that essays are written in. English courses almost always require their essays in the format, making it is the best to master. It has specific rules about how to cite from a book and how to cite more specifically the name and date of books.

    In-Text Citations

    • In-text citations tell readers where the source came from. They can see a list of sources at the end of a paper. In-text citations need to have three things. First, they appear in parentheses at the end of a sentence but before the period. Second, they include the author's name, (if you use the same author twice, list his name with a 1 or a 2 after it depending on the source). Third it lists the page number from the book that is being cited.

    End of Text Citations

    • At the end of the text, you need a works cited or bibliography. Here you need to list book and other sources for the reader to see. Each book needs to be listed with the following information: Author's name (last name, first name), Title of book (underlined), Edition of the book and Volume Number, Publishing City and Company, publishing year and a list of the page numbers you used.

    Finished Product

    • If you have done these steps properly, then in the text, there should be citations after every use of the book and there can be numerous of the same citation. Then, at the end you need a list of every book or other source for that matter. You have properly cited the name and date of the book.
