How to Cite a Book in APA Format Without a Date of Publication

Nearly every academic essay, journal article and research document that is written must contain a list of cited references that the author used when compiling his research. The American Psychological Association (APA) style is one format to use when citing your sources at the end of your document. The APA style is primarily used for documents related to social sciences such as economics, history and sociology. A citation can still be made if one or more of the required information is missing, such as the date of publication.

Instructions

    • 1

Start composing your citation in the APA format for books. The APA format for a book with one author is "Author Last Name, Author First Name. (Publication Year). Book Title in Italics. Publication City: Name of Publisher." Start your citation by typing the author's last name followed by a comma and the author's first name and a period.

    • 2

Type "n.d." in the parentheses where publication year belongs. The abbreviation "n.d." stands for "no date" and can be used in any APA citation that doesn't indicate when it was published or produced. Search your book well before writing "n.d." since nearly every book contains a publication date.

    • 3

Type the rest of your citation. Type the book title in Italics, or underline it if writing the citation is handwritten, followed by a period. Type the name of the city where the book was primarily published, followed a by a colon and the name of the publisher and a period. For example, your citation will look like this: Smith, John. (n.d.). The Importance of Teeth Brushing. Boston: Colony Publishing Co.
