How to Cite a Book, Chapter, and Title in APA Format

When citing a book in American Psychological Association (APA) format, you don't necessarily need to cite the chapter. In the text of the paper, a citation only needs to include the author, date and page number. However, you can certainly mention or discuss the book's title and chapter, and APA has specific rules for formatting them. In the reference list, you need to cite more information than in a parenthetical reference, including the book's title, but you don't need to cite a chapter number unless the chapter's author differs from the book's author.

Instructions

  1. In the Body of the Paper

    • 1

Write the title of the book in italic text.

    • 2

Enclose the chapter title in quotation marks. If any punctuation -- such as a comma or period -- follows the chapter title, put the punctuation mark after the chapter title but before the last quotation mark.

    • 3

Capitalize the first letter of each word in the title and chapter title, except articles and small prepositions.

    In the Reference List

    • 4

Cite the author of the chapter -- last name first, then a comma, then the first initial, followed by a period.

    • 5

Cite the book's year of publication in parentheses, followed by a period.

    • 6

Cite the title of the chapter using sentence case, capitalizing only the first word and proper nouns. Don't enclose the chapter title in quotation marks.

    • 7

Write the word "In" and then cite the editor or compiler of the book, in normal order instead of inverted -- first initial and then last name. After the name, write the word "Ed." (or "Eds.," for more than one editor), in parentheses, followed by a comma.

    • 8

Write the title of the book, using sentence capitalization. Format the title in italics.

    • 9

Insert parentheses; inside the parentheses write "pp." and then cite the page numbers that the chapter spans within the book. After the parentheses, add a period.

    • 10

Write the location of the book's publisher, followed by a colon; next, cite the publisher.
