How to Cite in Text for an Article per APA

Citing an article within your text is useful when you wish to demonstrate that your work is referring to another published source and is necessary when credit is due. Fortunately, citing an article according to American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines can be done relatively quickly, enabling you to give fair credit without disturbing the flow of your work.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin with an open parenthesis after information in the article has been referred to. For example: "...and other articles have reported similar...("

    • 2

Write the last name of the author. If the work has more than one author, write the last name of each author separated by a comma. In future references to this work, only write the last name of the first author and the words "et al" following it. If the text was produced by an organization and not a specific individual, write the full name of the organization instead.

    • 3

      Write a comma.

    • 4

Write the year which the work was published.

    • 5

(Optional) Write a comma and include a reference to the specific page. For example: "(Jacobs, 2006, p.43)."

    • 6

Close parentheses. For example: "...and other articles have reported similar findings (Farthing,

      Davidson and Roberts, 1991)."
