Write your resume using a word processor or online template as a guide. Basic to elaborate resume templates are available in most word processing software menus. These templates can help beginners construct a clean and concise resume. Free samples can also be found on the Internet at InstantResumeTemplates.com, ResumeResource.com and FreeResumeTemplate.net. (See links in Resources.)
Keep your document professional by using 12 point Times Roman font. Keep the document free of pictures, captions or fancy lines. The header may be slightly larger (16 to 20 point) and can be bold. It should include your name, address, telephone and e-mail address. Use a business-friendly e-mail address. [email protected] or [email protected] are good examples. Combining your name and birth date is preferable to nicknames, pet names or vulgar wording.
Focus on highlighting school experience, such as course work and volunteer work, if you are writing your resume for a class. Possible categories include: relevant course work, job-related experience/internships, awards and achievements, volunteer work and recent publications (for journalism and writing students). Information in each category should be listed chronologically. Providing a brief description in one to three lines of text after each class, job/internship, and volunteer position will provide employers with a description of what was expected of you. This is also a good opportunity to highlight your strengths. Use active and concise language.
Conclude with a reference section containing at least three references. References should include the name, contact information (including e-mail and telephone number), and title (Dr., Professor, if applicable). Aim for at least two references associated with your school or school-related activities.
