How to Do a Portfolio for My Social Work Class

Compiling a portfolio can seem like a daunting task, especially when the portfolio includes academic rather than creative work. Numerous social science programs require students to compile a portfolio of work prior to graduation. Social work portfolios may include work from prior social work classes and new material written specifically for the portfolio. An effective social work portfolio should feature your best academic work and display your knowledge of the social work field.

Instructions

    • 1

Include assignments from prior social work classes such as case studies, papers, research reports or program development plans. You may have to create new material depending on how much your instructor asks you to include.

    • 2

Select material that reflects your expertise on the social work profession and your scholastic achievement. The portfolio should showcase your best work across the social work curriculum.

    • 3

Write an introduction that overviews the material contained in the portfolio and your academic progress so far. Add a table of contents. Include a cover sheet with your contact information.

    • 4

Organize your work into sections. Provide brief introductory abstracts for each section. An abstract is a short overview of the work that follows.

    • 5

Obscure references to clients by changing names, if applicable. Indicate in the introduction that you have changed the names to protect clients' privacy.

    • 6

Format your portfolio according to the guidelines provided by your instructor. Some instructors may prefer you to staple your work; others may request that you bind your portfolio in a folder.
