How to Cite Family Code in APA

The American Psychological Association developed the APA style guide for related published works to follow when citing sources and references. When citing legal references, including Family Code, which is legal code that covers all areas (such as marriage, divorce and children) pertaining to families, the APA follows the Bluebook format, the uniform legal guide. Following a uniform system allows the reader to more easily find additional information on the topic.

Instructions

    • 1

List the title of the code first; for example, General Provisions: Attorney Fee's and Costs.

    • 2

Identify the source of the family code; for example, California Family Code. Each state has its own set of codes pertaining to the family.

    • 3

Write the code entry or number -- 270, for example -- next. In the California Family Code, Attorney Fee's and Costs, section 270 covers determining whether the party ordered to pay the attorney fee's is actually able to do so.

    • 4

Finish the citation by listing the code's publication date.

    • 5

Insert the correct punctuation when citing the code. Place a comma after the code title and a period after the source. The code number is followed by the publication date in parenthesis. For example:

General Provisions: Attorney Fee's and Costs, California Family Code. 270 (1993)
