How to Cite a Whole Paragraph From the Same Source in APA Format

You have decided that summarizing or paraphrasing a paragraph in your research paper will not do. You need the whole thing. But you are correct if your instincts tell you to deviate from standard APA style to properly cite the paragraph. If you have a paragraph that is at least 40 words long, here's how to set it off so your readers can value the paragraph's addition to your paper as much as you do.

Instructions

    • 1

Indent the paragraph five spaces in from the left margin. Introduce the author, according to APA style and on a line by itself. Use a colon to indicate a paragraph break. For example: "Sherman's (2010) study revealed the following:"

    • 2

Start the borrowed paragraph on a new line, which should be an extra five spaces indented than the margin above it.

    • 3

Continue this indention procedure, 10 spaces in from the left margin, until the paragraph is complete.

    • 4

Omit quotation marks, for the extra five spaces serve as the reader's signal that the paragraph is borrowed material.

    • 5

Double-space between lines in the paragraph.
