How to Cite References From the Dictionary

All sources that you use in your paper should be cited; this way, you will avoid the appearance of plagiarism. If you quote or paraphrase from a source within the text of your paper, you should not only list the source in your works cited page but also cite that source directly in your text. The Modern Language Association (MLA) offers guidelines for the proper citation of references from a dictionary.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite the title of the entry and the page number on which it appears parenthetically in the text. The title of the entry should appear in quotation marks. For example: ("Capitalism" 117).

    • 2

Cite within the text directly after quoting or paraphrasing from your source. For example:

Webster's Dictionary defines capitalism as an "economic system characterized by free exchange" ("Capitalism" 117).

    • 3

Format your works cited entry according to the following template:

"Title of Entry." Name of Dictionary (in italics). Edition Number. Year of Publication. Medium of Publication.

For example: "Capitalism." Webster's Dictionary. 5th ed. 2002. Print.
