How to Cite a Reference That Includes Another Citation Within the Text in APA

Citing references is an important part of writing papers in APA style to avoid plagiarism. Since APA style has many different rules regarding in-text citations, it can be difficult to decide how to cite a book, journal or source that includes another citation. The American Psychological Association has simple rules to follow when citing indirect or secondary sources.

Instructions

    • 1

Summarize the particular citation you would like to cite. This will allow you to use parenthesis to cite your source within the summary. Be sure not to plagiarize; use your own words and sentence structure.

    • 2

Open parenthesis, "(." Write or type "as cited in."

    • 3

Follow "as cited in," with the last name of the author of the book, journal, or source, followed by a comma.

    • 4

Add the date of publication of the source in figures followed by a comma. Page is abbreviated "p." For example, you would write, "p. 2002."

    • 5

Add the page number of the indirect source using figures. Close parenthesis, ")," and end with a period. An example of an indirect citation would be, "(as cited in Green, 2002, p. 128)."
