How to Cite According to the APA Within Documents?

While in college, you may be required to use several different styles of citation, depending on which classes you are taking. The American Psychological Association sets guidelines for the formatting of papers in the social science disciplines. One aspect of APA guidelines covers the correct citation of sources within the text. The American Psychological Association citation format uses an author-year-page format for in-text citation.

Instructions

    • 1

List the author's last name, followed by a comma. For example: Smith,

    • 2

List the year the source was published, followed by a comma. For example: 1999,

    • 3

List the number of the page you are citing. For example: p. 17

    • 4

Enclose the entire citation within parentheses. For example: (Smith, 1999, p. 17)

    • 5

Position your citation at the end of the sentence if you are summarizing, but before the period. For example: Some authors have argued that death is, in fact, a new beginning (Smith, 1999, p. 17).

This also applies to direct quotations. For example: Some authors have argued that "death is, in fact, a new beginning" (Smith, 1999, p. 17).

If a clause is separated by a semicolon, the citation should appear before the semicolon. For example: Some authors have argued that death is, in fact, a new beginning (Smith, 1999, p. 17); others disagree.

Omit the author's name from your parenthetical citation if you have already mentioned him by name in the text. In this case, the year of publication should be listed in parentheses after the author's name, while the page number should still appear after the summarized or quoted section. For example: Smith (1999) has argued that death is, in fact, a new beginning (p. 17).
