How to Cite KJV & MLA

Because the Bible is organized uniquely into sections, chapters and verses, and also because it has no single author and appears in so many translations and editions, the Modern Language Association has developed specific guidelines for proper citation. According to MLA standards, the correct citation format will depend on whether you are citing the King James Version within the text, or whether you are listing it on a Works Cited page.

Instructions

  1. In-text Citation

    • 1

Place your in-text citation within parentheses.

    • 2

Begin your citation with the edition of the Bible you are referencing, followed by a comma. In this case, the edition would be the King James Version.

    • 3

List the section, chapter and verse that you are citing. The chapter and verse should be separated by a colon.

    • 4

Make sure that your first citation appears in the following format:

(King James Version, 5 Cor. 5:14)

Subsequent citations from the same edition of the Bible do not need to indicate this again. For example:

      (5 Cor. 5:17)

    Bibliographical Citation

    • 5

Begin your citation with the full title of the edition you are using. Italicize the title. Follow this information with a period. For example:

      The King James Bible.

    • 6

List the city of publication, followed by a colon. For example:

      New York City:

    • 7

List the name of the publisher, followed by a comma. For example:

      Evangelical Press,

    • 8

List the year of publication, followed by a period. For example:

      2002.

    • 9

List the medium of publication, followed by a period. For example:

      Print.

    • 10

Make sure that your citation appears in the following format:

The King James Bible. New York City: Evangelical Press, 2002. Print.
