How to Cite in MLA From a Text Book

There are a few different recognized and accepted styles of academic writing, with Modern Language Association -- more commonly referred to as MLA -- as one of the most widely accepted. The simplicity of this style is what sets it apart from others. If you want to add to your in-text citations and Works Cited list using a text book as a source, you can do so with the proper formatting techniques.

Instructions

  1. In-Text Citations

    • 1

      Write the last name of the author, space, and the page number for text books with one author.

      Example: (Doe 1).

    • 2

      Write the last names of the authors, separated by commas, a space after each comma, and the page number for text books with two to three authors.

      Example: (Doe, Smith, and Moore 1).

      Write the last name of the first author, space, et al. for text books with four or more authors.

      Example: (Doe et al. 1).

    Works Cited-One Author

      Write the last name of the author, comma, space, and the author's first name, followed by a period for text books with one author.

      Add a space, and in italic font write the title of the book, followed by a period.

      Write the number of the edition after the title, followed by a period.

      Write the place of publication, colon, space, name of the publisher, comma, space, and the year of publication, followed by a period.

      Add a space and write "Print" as the medium of publication. The finished entry should appear as follows: Doe, John. My Text Book (italic). 1st ed. New York: Pearson/Longman, 2011. Print.

    Works Cited-Two to Three Authors

      Write the last name of the first author, comma, space, and the author's first name, the second author's name in the first name, last name format, followed by a period for text books with two to three authors.

      Add a space, and in italic font write the title of the book, followed by a period.

      Write the number of the edition after the title, followed by a period.
