How to MLA Cite an Online Book

According to the Modern Language Association (MLA), for every source quoted or paraphrased in a paper, an in-text citation needs to go directly next to the material being used. The source must also be entered into the works cited page at the end of the paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine if the book has one author or multiple authors. The formatting differs slightly in both cases. Also, look at the file itself to see if your source contains page numbers.

    • 2

Find the material in the paper needing the citation. The citation needs to go at the end of the material being paraphrased or quoted.

    • 3

Write out the citation. Between parentheses, place the author's last name and the page number of the material you used. It should look like this: (Last Name, Page Number). A fictionalized example: (Weller 132). A book with two authors follows the order of the byline (Weller and Topping 132). A book with three or more authors employs the Latin expression "et al" after the first name: (Weller et al 132).

    • 4

Drop the page number if the book is in HTML or a format that does not contain page breaks or numbers. In this case, only the author's name should appear between the parentheses. For example: (Weller), (Weller and Topping) or (Weller et al).

    • 5

Go to your works cited page. Find the proper space in the alphabetized order, and write out the book's publishing information in the following order: Last Name, First Name. Title of the book underlined or in italics. Place of publication: Publisher's name, Year (if available). Website hosting the book. How the book was original published. Date you accessed the book.

      For example:

Weller, Elizabeth D. _Ghost Psychosis in Hamlet: A Study_ New York: Non-Existing Press, 2007. _Google Books_ Web. 30 August, 2010.
