How to Cite an Online Encyclopedia in MLA

Traditional encyclopedias have undergone a transition from print to digital on the Internet. According to an article in "The New York Times," this evolution started as early as 1994: "Encyclopedia Britannica, the publisher of the nation's oldest and most prestigious reference work, said today that it would begin offering electronic distribution of its materials to universities and some public libraries via the Internet, the world's largest computer network." Encyclopedia articles, in whatever form, are still respected reference material and you should ensure you follow proper MLA (Modern Language Association) standards when formatting online sources.
