How to Cite an Online Encyclopedia in CMS

CMS is an abbreviation for the Chicago Manual of Style. The Chicago Manual of Style uses a specific citation style in academic papers and other writings to document exactly where your information came from. To add an online encyclopedia source to your bibliography, gather the following information: the name of the encyclopedia, the title of the entry, the website address and the date you accessed the information.

Instructions

    • 1

Type the name of the encyclopedia in italics, followed by a period.

    • 2

Type the title of the entry you are citing in quotation marks, followed by a comma.

    • 3

Add the URL of the website of the encyclopedia entry. Do not add a period or a comma. After the website address, place the date that you accessed this information in parentheses and a comma after the day. Follow this with a period.

    • 4

Check your work for accuracy. Your citation should look similar to this example: Name of Encyclopedia in Italics. “Title of Entry,” website address (accessed month day, year). Do not abbreviate the month.
