How to Cite Charts

Paper writers use charts to illustrate the statistical information relevant to their thesis. Authors often rely on information that others have gathered. Providing proper citations for the charts allows readers to independently verify the information presented in the paper. The writer's research discipline determines the format of the citation for the chart. Knowing how to cite a chart allows you to provide complete references for your research papers.

Instructions

    • 1

Record the bibliographic information for the source. Write down the name of the person or organization that produced the chart and the name of the publication in which the chart appeared, as well as additional information such as date of publication, page or table number and the format of the source that you accessed (e.g. web or print).

    • 2

Determine which style guide you should use for your citation. Consult with your professor or publisher about what the preferred style guide is. Typically, publishers in the humanities prefer MLA format, while those in the social science use APA.

    • 3

Format the bibliographic information according to the chosen style guide for the paper. Insert the citation immediately beneath the chart as it appears in the paper. For example, the format in MLA is Source: Author, Title, Publisher, Date of Publication, Page or table reference. APA format looks like Author. (Date), Title of chart (Chart), Name of author and publication in which it appears, Place of Publication, Publisher.
