How to Cite a Chart in an Article

Learning how to properly construct a works-cited page in a college paper can make a difference on your final grade. Writing a citation in Modern Language Association (MLA) style, the standard for papers in the arts and humanities, is not hard to learn. Citing a chart in an MLA format requires that you use a legitimate resource in your paper that is directly referenced in your work. Whether you include the chart within your paper is up to the discretion of your professor. Either way, citing a chart requires you to properly reference the material in which it is listed.

Instructions

    • 1

Start your citation with the title of the chart. It must have a proper title to be listed. The resource material should have a title listed with the chart you are referencing.

    • 2

List the type of format. This means stating the type of document you are listing, which in this case would be "chart". Follow "chart" by a period. For example: Bedbug Infestations. Chart. New York: Time Magazine, 2007.

    • 3

Follow the delineation of "chart" by the place of publication, usually by city. Follow this by a colon, followed by the publisher, as in: Bedbug Infestations. Chart. New York: Time Magazine, 2007.

    • 4

Place a comma after the publisher and then list the copyright. This can be stated by just listing the year. For example: Bedbug Infestations. Chart. New York: Time Magazine, 2007.
