How to Cite an Online Encyclopedia With APA Style

Encyclopedias contain general information about a broad range of subjects. They are useful resources for a broad range of papers. You can conveniently access many encyclopedias online. Since physical encyclopedias often comprise numerous volumes, using Internet versions saves time spent thumbing through pages. When following APA style, however, the format for citing an encyclopedia entry differs notably from the format for citing most common sources.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the title of the entry used from the encyclopedia. If the title includes more than one word, then capitalize just the first word and any proper nouns. Add a period at the end of the entry title, but don't add quotation marks around the title.

    • 2

Cite, within parentheses, the encyclopedia's year of publication. If the entry doesn't specify a publication date, then check the bottom of the page for a copyright date or for the year the site was last updated. If the page indicates no date, then write "n.d." within the parentheses. Add a period, per normal APA guidelines, after the parentheses that enclose the date.

    • 3

Write "In" and then cite the name of the online encyclopedia, followed by a period. Italicize the encyclopedia's name, but don't italicize the word "In."

    • 4

Add a retrieval statement that includes your date of access. Although APA style advises against including a retrieval date for most entries, you should include the date if the information on the page might change over time. According to the Cornell University Library, entries in online encyclopedias provide a perfect example of sources that require retrieval dates, because their information is often updated to remain timely, accurate and relevant.

Begin the statement by writing "Retrieved"; then, write the exact date--month, day and year--of when you last viewed the entry online. Add one comma after the day and another after the year. Next, write the word "from" and, after a space, paste the entry's direct URL.
