How to Cite an Online News Service With APA Style Format

Newspapers have always provided usefully up-to-date information, and since the creation of online news services, their accessibility and timeliness have only increased. When using this convenient type of source in a research paper, however, you must follow certain citation guidelines. The American Psychological Association's (APA) rules for referencing articles from online newspapers ensure that your paper provides proper credit in a clear format, thereby protecting your paper's credibility and helping readers find your resources.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite the author of the news article; write the last name, then a comma and a space, then the initial of the first name and lastly a period.

    • 2

Write the newspaper article's full publication date, within parentheses. First note the year; after a comma, write the month, unabbreviated, and the numerical day. Place a period after the parentheses.

    • 3

Cite the title of the news article, capitalized like a sentence; only capitalize proper nouns and the title's first word. Don't italicize the title or add quotation marks. End the title with a period, unless it concludes with another mark of punctuation, such as a question mark or exclamation point.

    • 4

Write the name of the online news service, capitalizing the first letter of every word except any small prepositions or articles. Italicize the name and add a period at the end.

    • 5

Include a retrieval statement by writing "Retrieved from" and then inserting the appropriate URL. To determine the appropriate URL, check whether you can find the article using the online news service's search feature. If you can access the article that way, then use the URL for the news service's home page. APA style prefers this method because the direct link for a news article can change or expire, whereas the home page address remains the same. If the service doesn't offer a search feature or if you can't find the article by searching the site, however, then paste the direct URL. Do not put a period after the end of the URL.
