Gather and record the necessary publication information for the cited story. This includes author, title of story, title of collection, editor of collection, publisher, publisher location, publication date and page numbers.
Read your finished paper and make note of every location where the story is referenced, both as a direct quotation and paraphrased discussion.
Insert parentheses at the end of every sentence where the story is referenced. Place the parentheses inside of the final period with a single space after the last word.
Enter the story author's last name followed by the specific page number or range of numbers to which the text refers inside of each set of parentheses. The page numbers should indicate where in the reprinted collection a reader can find the story. If the author's name has been stated in the text preceding the parentheses, then only the page numbers are necessary.
Make an entry on the Work Cited or References page -- the last page of all academic papers -- that provides a detailed reference for the book in which the story was reprinted. Start with the story author's name, with last name preceding the first name and separated by a comma. After the author's name, enter a period.
Be certain that your document is set up for hanging indent on the References page. With hanging indent, the first line is along the left margin while any following lines are indented five spaces.
Place the title of the story in quotation marks after the author's name. Place a period after the title, but inside the last quotation marks.
Enter book title and publication information next. Use italics for the title of the book. Finish the title with a period, then continue with "Ed." followed by the editor's name. After another period, enter city and state of publication followed by a colon.
Enter the name of the publishing house after the colon. Punctuate this information with a comma followed by the year of publication. After the year, place another period. Then enter the page numbers on which the reprinted story is found.
Enter a period after the page numbers and then indicate the medium of publication. This may be print or electronic, in the case of an e-book. After one final period, the entry is complete.
