How to Reference an Article on a Website With No Author or Date in APA Format

As the Internet becomes ever more prevalent as a source of information, it is likely that you will find yourself referencing Internet articles with increasing frequency. However, citing the Internet can sometimes be frustrating, because normal publication information such as the author or publication date is not always readily apparent. According to APA (American Psychological Association) style, sources with an unknown author should appear in reference lists alphabetized by document title. In addition, APA style allows for the use of the abbreviation "n.d." (which stands for "no date") when no date of publication is listed.

Instructions

    • 1

List the title of the document, followed by a period. According to APA format, only the first letter of the title should be capitalized. However, the first letters of proper nouns in the title should also be capitalized. For example:

Methods of using American cheese in cooking.

    • 2

List "n.d." in parentheses, followed by a period. For example:

      (n.d.).

    • 3

List the URL of the website in the following format:

      Retrieved from http://cookingusa/cheeses/recipes/american67513o9

    • 4

Ensure that the finished citation appears in the following format:

Methods of using American cheese in cooking. (n.d.). Retrieved from http://cookingusa/cheeses/recipes/american67513o9

    • 5

Alphabetize your reference according to the title, because the author is unknown. For instance, your reference entry for "Methods of using American cheese in cooking" might appear between entries written by Bill MacDonald and Kelly Norris.
