How to APA-Cite an Article With No Author

The American Psychological Association, or APA, publishes a manual of rules for formatting papers, including citations and references. APA style, which is generally used in the social sciences, is updated every few years. It is important to keep abreast of the current guidelines for fomratting in-text citations, including citing an article that does not include the name of its author.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a signal phrase that introduces the title of the article instead of the author. For example, you would write, "In 'APA Standards' (2010), it was argued that," if "APA Standards" were the name of the article and it was published in 2010. If the article title is long, use only the first few words. Place the article title in quotation marks.

    • 2

Cite the article after the sentence by placing the title in parenthesis. Using the previous example, you would write ("APA Standards," 2010) at the end of the sentence that references the article.

    • 3

If the article actually states that it is by Anonymous, use Anonymous as the name of the author in the reference citation. For example: (Anonymous, 2010)
