How to Document Web Sources in APA Format

American Psychological Association style is a set of guidelines for formatting a paper and reference list, and is generally used by students who are writing about the social sciences such as psychology or sociology. Just like print media, electronic media found on the Internet must also be listed on a reference page. The exact format for listing electronic resources according to APA guidelines will depend on what type of Internet source you are referring to.

Format your citation in the following manner if you are referencing an article from an online periodical. When listing the title of the article, only the first letter of the title and proper nouns should be capitalized. Make sure that the title of the online periodical appears in italics, and that the volume number also appears in italics. The issue number should not be italicized.

Author's Last Name, First Initial. (Year of Publication). Article title. Online Periodical Title, volume #(issue #). Retrieved from http://www.webaddress.com/moreweb/address

      For example:

Berman, D. (2010). How to make sense of Einstein's amazing genius. The Online Journal of American Medicine, 17(3). Retrieved from http://americanjournal/articleid-&6625get7268

If the article you are referencing comes from a scholarly online journal that provides a Digital Object Identifier number, or DOI number, provide the DOI number instead of the web address. For example:

Berman, D. (2010). How to make sense of Einstein's amazing genius. The Online Journal of American Medicine, 17(3). doi: 465.89/3664452889
