How to Cite Several Works by the Same Author in an Anthology

Citing multiple works by the same author requires a regular reference the first time and, in some cases, minor changes in subsequent references. These vary depending on what referencing style one is using, though they often consist of replacing the author's name.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the style of citation you will use.

    • 2

Arrange the works alphabetically by their titles if you're using the MLA citation style. For the first work, provide the author's last and first names, the name of the work and the name of the anthology (italicized). Also provide the names of the editors of the anthology, preceded by "Ed." Provide the place of publication, the name of the publisher, the year of publication, the pages in the anthology which contain the work and the format of the anthology. Follow the same format for subsequent works but replace the author's name with three hyphens. The following are examples of such citations:

Doe, Jane. "MLA Citations." Big Book of Citations. Ed. John Smith. New York: ABC Publishing, 1999. 263-77. Print.
---. "More MLA Citations." Big Book of Citations. Ed. John Smith. New York: ABC Publishing, 1999. 104-34. Print.

Provide the author's last and first names in each citation and arrange them according to publication date, from earliest to latest if using APA format. If the works are published in the same year or month, arrange them alphabetically according to their titles. The citation should include the author's last name and first initial, the year of publication in brackets, the title of the work, the word "In" followed by the editors name and "Ed." in brackets, the title of the anthology (italicized) followed by the page numbers the work is found on, the place of publication and the publisher's name. The following are examples of such citations:

Doe, J (1999). APA Citations. In J. Smith (Ed.), Big Book of Citations (3-18). New York: ABC Publishing.
Doe, J (1999). More APA Citations. In J. Smith (Ed.), Big Book of Citations (27-38). New York: ABC Publishing.

Provide the author's last and first names, the name of the work and the word "In" followed by the name of the anthology (italicized) in the first citation if using the Chicago or Turabian styles. Also provide the names of the editors of the anthology, preceded by "edited by." Provide the pages in the anthology which contain the work, the place of publication, the name of the publisher and the year of publication. Use the same format for subsequent citations but replace the name with three em-dashes. The following are examples of such citations:

Doe, Jane. "Chicago Citations." In Big Book of Citations, edited by John Smith, 167-184. New York: ABC Publishing, 1999.
---. "More Chicago Citations." In Big Book of Citations, edited by John Smith, 137-148. New York: ABC Publishing, 1999.
