How to Cite the Physician's Desk Reference in APA Format

When writing a research paper, you may unintentionally plagiarize if you do not properly cite your sources with in-text citations and in the bibliography. Several different formats exist for citing references. One format is the American Psychological Association or APA format, which is usually used when writing a research paper as part of your undergraduate or graduate degree. When citing the "Physician's Desk Reference," a compilation of information on prescription drugs also known as PDR, follow the APA guidelines for citing a reference book and remember that this source does not have an author.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a reference to the "Physician's Desk Reference" in the sentence where an in-text citation is necessary in the paper. Italicize "Physician's Desk Reference" but do not place it in quotation marks.

    • 2

Follow the reference to the PDR with the year of the publication. The reference can fall anywhere in the sentence as long as both the text and the year are mentioned. For example, "In the Physician's Desk Reference (2010), doctors say..."

    • 3

Place the title of the section or drug first in your reference followed by a period when including a citation in the bibliography. Do not indent; the first line should be at the left side of the page.

    • 4

Type the year of the Physician's Desk Reference you used in parentheses followed by a period.

    • 5

Put "In Physician's desk reference" (no quotation marks) following the date. Do not put a period after this entry. The word "In" is not italicized, but "Physician's desk reference" is italicized. Also, notice that only the first word of the title of the reference book is capitalized.

    • 6

Enter the page number(s) in parentheses for your information following the reference book. Use "pp." for more than one page or "pg." for only one page. Put a period after your closing parentheses. For example, "(pp. 212-215)." or "(pg. 214)."

    • 7

Enter the city and state where the book is published. Put a comma between the city and state and use the official two-letter U.S. Postal Service abbreviation for the state. Enter a colon (:) after the state, followed by one space.

    • 8

Type the name of the publisher after the colon. Follow your final entry with a period. Your final entry should appear as follows:

Claritin. (2010). In Physician's desk reference (pp. 523-526). San Francisco, CA: Medical Economics.

If your entry runs onto a second line, double-space between lines and indent the second line five spaces.
