How to End a Formal Speech

All of the parts of a formal speech are important. The beginning, opening remarks and middle of the speech are where you will present your exciting new ideas to your audience. It is equally important to develop a strong conclusion to your formal speech. The ending is the last time you will speak to your audience and a bad ending can erase the positive impressions your audience had from earlier moments in your speech. Develop a strong and succinct conclusion that will leave your audience fulfilled.

Instructions

    • 1

Stop before you think you or your audience wants you to. Drawing out your conclusion can take away from the main ideas that you wanted to emphasize earlier in the speech.

    • 2

Summarize the main points that you covered throughout your speech. Do not simply repeat what you have already said, but rather, rephrase these points so that it is clear you are ending.

    • 3

Close with a point or idea that you really want your audience to remember.

    • 4

End with a joke, interesting remark or even thank your audience for their time and attention. Leave your audience thinking positively about you and the information you presented in your speech.
