How to Give an Autobiography Speech

An autobiography speech is a first-person narrative about your life. Its purpose is not to tell the audience every fact of your life. An autobiographical speech is more about telling a compelling story that will captivate the audience's minds and teach them the hard-fought lessons you have learned in life through your experiences, and the results of those lessons.

Instructions

    • 1

Brainstorm all the events in your past that you want to share with the audience. Write down as many events as you can think of, then choose the events that make the best stories

    • 2

Start with your most memorable life story to draw the audience into your speech right away. If you had a near-death experience, transformed your life in a dramatic way or played a part in making a big difference in somebody else's life, start out your autobiographical speech by telling one of these stories.

    • 3

Prioritize the life events that are most relevant to your audience. You cannot tell all the stories from your life — there are far too many of them. Select the events by the measuring the level of impact they had on your life. You can also limit your stories by focusing on a particular time period in your life.

    • 4

Provide plenty of examples from your life to highlight the aspects you want to talk about. For instance, if you are talking about how you related to women in your life, talk about your relationships with your mother, sister, grandmother, girlfriends, wife and female co-workers.

    • 5

Connect the dots between the stories you tell about your life and your current situation. Explain how these different experiences have made you who you are and what you are today.

    • 6

Find creative and funny ways to talk about your life. If your autobiography speech is merely a group of dates and facts, the audience will lose interest quickly. Keep them engaged in the whole speech by putting effort into your phrasing and the specific words you use to describe your life. Give the audience your own unique perspective, told in an honest and compelling fashion.

    • 7

Make fun of yourself and tell potentially embarrassing stories to show your human qualities to the audience. This lets the audience know that you are a regular person, and it can be very inspiring.

    • 8

Interview people you encountered throughout your life to balance your speech with diverse perspectives. Read some quotations to the audience from people who interacted with you at different stages of your life. This adds believability and nuance to the autobiographical stories you tell.
