List of Colleges in Rhode Island

Rhode Island is known for being the smallest state in the nation. It yet it also offers beaches, ski resorts, museums, historic homes and even whale watching. High school students have many choices in higher education. Rhode Island's history of dissent and non-conformity, it was founded by Roger Williams who was expelled from Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 17th century, may be particularly appealing to some students.

    • The University of Rhode Island's four campuses offer both graduate and undergraduate programs. Rhode Island awards pre-veterinary bachelor's degrees in environmental and life science and bachelor's of landscaping architecture. It also has a graduate school of oceanography. The university's honors program offers smaller classes and more opportunities for in-depth research. The university awards merit scholarships to incoming freshmen who have a high GPA, rank in the top 25 percent of their high school class, score high on the ACT or SAT tests and show leadership qualities. Rhode Island has intercollegiate and club sports and a school wellness center. All students can use center, which has its own personal trainer program.

    Rhode Island School of Design

    • Founded in 1877, the Rhode Island School of Design has 16 undergraduate majors and 17 graduate majors, including architecture, ceramics, industrial design, painting, sculpture and photography. Applicants need to submit a portfolio of 12 to 20 samples that can include two- or three-dimensional works. They also must submit two writing samples, letters of recommendation and SAT scores. International students must demonstrate English proficiency by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language or the International English Language Testing System exams.

    Bryant University

    • Bryant University, in Smithfield, is made up of the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and the Graduate School of Business. Founded in 1862, the university offers bachelor of arts or science in actuarial mathematics, entrepreneurship, politics and law and environmental science, while its graduate school awards master's degrees in business administration, professional accounting and taxation. Bryant has special interest clubs in politics and debate, student media organizations, like the student newspaper, and campus radio station. It offers sports including figure skating, hockey, rugby, snowboarding and karate, some of which are intercollegiate, while others are open to all interested students.
